De veelgeprezen film ‘Girl’, die vanaf 17 oktober 2018 in de bioscoop te zien is, kwam tot stand mede dankzij het Transgender Infopunt en de expertise van het transgender onderzoek van de Universiteit Gent. Dit wetenschappelijk onderzoek is van groot belang voor de ondersteuning van jaarlijks ruim 1.400 individuen en maatschappelijke actoren met allerlei vragen over het transgenderthema.

Om mensen zoals Nora Monsecour, op wie de film ‘Girl’ geïnspireerd is, nog beter te ondersteunen doen we een beroep op jou.

Op 14 oktober 2018 om 10u30 kan je de film ‘Girl’ van de Vlaamse regisseur Lukas Dhont in avant-première bekijken tijdens een benefietvoorstelling in Kinepolis Gent. In aanwezigheid van regisseur Lukas Dhont (regisseur) en Nora Monsecour (op wie de film is gebaseerd), alsook prof. Guy T’Sjoen en prof. Joz Motmans van het Transgender Infopunt en bezielers van transgender onderzoek.

In oktober stemmen we opnieuw voor de gemeente- en provincieraad. Op de volgende Avond van Sophia wordt gereflecteerd over de inzet van deze lokale verkiezingen, in het algemeen, maar vooral vanuit feministisch en intersectioneel perspectief.

De laatste decennia hebben feministische pioniers kwesties zoals quota, politieke vertegenwoordiging en pariteit met wisselend succes op de politieke agenda gezet. Deze debatten focussen in hoofdzaak op vrouwen. Wat met andere sociale groepen en minderheden? Een intersectionele aanpak laat beter toe de gelaagdheid van de Belgische samenleving en de interactie tussen onder andere klasse, gender, etniciteit, leeftijd, dis/ability… in kaart te brengen.

Worden feministische eisen gehoord en zichtbaar gemaakt op een lokaal niveau? Welke kandidaten hebben macht en hoe gebruiken ze die macht? Op welke kiezers is lokale politiek afgestemd en wie wordt buitengesloten? Zijn er andere vormen van politieke organisatie die inclusiviteit en participatie sterker in de hand werken?

Deze vragen en meer worden besproken in een interactief panelgesprek met Petra Meier (UA, moderator), Karen Celis (VUB), Gratia Pungu (ambtenaar, feministisch activist en vakbondsafgevaardigde ABVV), Emilie Van Hautte (ULB), Hilde Van Wichelen (Gemeenteraadslid Leuven) en Fatima Zibouh (ULg).

Tijdens een driedaags event van 14 tot 16 september 2018 wil de Vrouwenraad jonge feministen (18 tot 30 jaar) samenbrengen om ideeën en ervaringen uit te wisselen, gesprekken te voeren en te reflecteren over feminisme en vrouwenrechten. Ze willen een participatieve leerruimte creëren waar je kan groeien en zelfvertrouwen opbouwen als feministe.

This practical course educates students in how to do and carry out feminist research. We will focus on how feminist scholars challenge dominant theories of knowledge and the major methodologies employed in the social sciences and humanities.

Through lectures and workshops, we will ask how feminist theory shapes the kinds of research questions we ask, the types of materials we use, the methodologies we choose, and how we define our relationships with our subjects/materials.

Students are expected to conduct a short pre-assignment, actively participate in the workshop discussions, and critically reflect throughout the course.

On 28 May 2018, the Human Rights Centre of Ghent University is organizing a seminar entitled “Gender, Borders and Human Rights” at the Faculty Board Room of Ghent Law Faculty (Voldersstraat 3, 9000 Gent).  

The seminar will bring together experts to discuss different notions of borders – not only the most obvious ones sustained by immigration controls – and how these borders limit the human rights of migrants and asylum seekers of diverse genders and sexual orientations. What kinds of borders come to shape the human rights of migrants and asylum seekers of different sexual orientations and genders? How do these groups of migrants and asylum seekers navigate – and in turn shape – these borders when they make human rights claims? Is the notion of borders a useful lens to identify and challenge the gendered societal and institutional structures that disadvantage migrants and asylum seekers in enjoying human rights?

The 26th edition of the NOISE Summer School seeks to address experiences of social and political suffocations, as well as accompanying strategies of resistance, through a series of lectures by scholars and activists who are all also embodied practitioners in their critical practice(s). With these, the five-day program of NOISE 2018 will offer innovative interventions into the debate on political involvement as theory and embodied practice, as well as a discussion of strategies of organizing in the face of individual, institutional and structural enclosures.
