Dit jaar kwamen meer dan 750 000 mensen Europa binnen over de zee. Een heel diverse groep mensen die vaak wordt geportretteerd als misbruikers van onze sociale zekerheid of als slachtoffers in een park.

De positieve kant wordt vaak vergeten. Intelligente en creatieve mensen zullen de komende paar jaren in ons land doorbrengen, waar ze kunnen zorgen voor interessante uitwisselingen en nieuwe manieren om naar de dingen te kijken.

Om te tonen wie deze mensen zijn hebben een aantal organisaties in Gent, waaronder de Universiteit Gent, de krachten gebundeld om vluchtelingen uit te nodigen voor 2 interessante avonden. Deze lezingen gaan door op 16 februari en 1 maart, telkens van 19u tot 21u30 (Atheneum Wispelberg, Wispelbergstraat 1-2, Gent). Op beide momenten kan je kiezen tussen twee interessante lezingen.

In April 2016 wordt de vierde editie van de Student Forum Maastricht georganiseerd (zie SFM_2016_Concept_Note). Dit is een conferentie waarin studenten in kleine groepjes aan beleidsvoorstellen werken voor de Europese Commissie en dit onder begeleiding van experten.

Dit jaar is er ook een werkgroep voor gender equality! Heb je ideeën rond gender equality in Europa? Dan is dit jouw kans om ze te delen met de Europese Commissie! Registreren kan nog tot 17 februari. Meer informatie via deze link.

Op 29 april (9u – 17u) organiseert de onderzoeksgroep ‘Media, Beleid en Cultuur’ (Universiteit Antwerpen) een workshop voor doctoraatsstudenten en postdoctorale onderzoekers.

Deadline for submission of abstracts for the next ATGENDER Spring Conference (Utrecht, April 21-23, 2016) is approaching! You can send your proposal until January 31st by following the instructions on the conference website.

Van 15 tot 20 augustus organiseert het U4 netwerk een interdisciplinaire summer school in Genderstudies voor doctoraatstudenten en masterstudenten. Het U4 netwerk is een samenwerking tussen de Universiteit Gent, Rijksuniversiteit Groningen, Universiteit van Göttingen en Universiteit van Uppsla.

Het indienen van een voorstel kan nog tot 31 januari! Dus wees er snel bij!

Op 25 februari 2016 (Antwerpen, 12u – 17u30) wordt er een onderzoeksseminarie ‘Kinderrechten en diversiteit in onderzoek’ georganiseerd. Tijdens dit seminarie staan volgende vragen centraal: Hoe gaat het kinderrechtenkader om met diversiteit tussen kinderen? Wat zijn sterktes en zwaktes? Hoe kan het beter? Hoe gaan onderzoekers om met diversiteit tussen kinderen in hun onderzoek?

Het seminarie wordt georganiseerd door het Kenniscentrum Kinderrechten (KeKi), het Centrum voor Mensenrechten (Universiteit Gent), de UNICEF Chair in Children’s Rights (Universiteit Antwerpen) en de wetenschappelijke redactie van het TJK (Tijdschrift voor Jeugd en Kinderrechten). Het wordt ondersteund door de Interuniversitaire Attractiepool (IUAP) “The Global Challenge of Human Rights Integration – Towards a Users’ Perspective” . De leden van het organiserend comité zijn prof. Eva Brems – dr. Giselle Corradi – dr. Ellen Desmet – mevr. Sara Lembrechts – mevr. Kathy Vlieghe – prof. Wouter Vandenhole.

De dienst Diversiteitsbeleid van de Vlaamse overheid organiseert haar tweede Gender-inspiratiedag op dinsdag 26 januari 2016 in het VAC Leuven (Auditorium Dirk Boutsgebouw).

De Genderdag omvat drie delen; een voormiddagluik rond genderdiversiteit, een namiddagluik rond het kruispunt tussen gender en etniciteit en als afsluiter een overkoepelend panelgesprek over gelijke kansen in leidinggevende functies. Inschrijven kan voor alle delen afzonderlijk, maar kan ook voor het volledige programma.

Carrying as a Feminist Method
by Nirmal Puwar (Goldsmith College)

The body has a memory, and embodied sensibilities shape our research in ways that we yet have to fully understand. This paper unpacks the notion of “carrying” as an embodied set of experiences and influences that bear upon us in the selection or avoidance of research matters. This discussion considers the informative and affective properties of sensibilities that touch our research directions. It is well recognised that we acquire and carry a body of books for company. What is not so easily acknowledged is the small incidents that stay with us and which often unknowingly offer anchorage to our points of attention. Commonly we carry a set of aesthetics which we struggle to give legitimacy. Most often the risks of anthropological romanticism or scientific reductionism constrain our attempts to work with different ways of being, seeing and feeling. This lecture considers the example of Giddha (Punjabi song and dance between women) that provides an instance of embodied transnational carrying of stories, voice and humour. This however is not an exercise in museum preservation or a politics of salvation.

Nirmal Puwar is Reader in Sociology and Co-Director of Methods Lab at Goldsmith College, University of London. Her work explores postcolonialism, institutions, race and gender, and critical methodologies. She is author of the book Space Invaders: Race, Gender and Bodies out of place (2004) and co-editor of eighteen collections, including: Live Methods; Intimacy in Research; Post-colonial Bourdieu; Fashion and Orientalism and South Asian Women in the Diaspora. She is co-convenor of the Race Forum of the British Sociological Association. In her recent work she has collaboratively worked on a number of projects involved with inventive and public methods.

Master Class with Nirmal Puwar

The Machteld de Metsenaere lecture is followed by a master class, which offers interested graduate students the opportunity to explore the notion of carrying more in depth together with Nirmal Puwar.

The master class is open to doctoral students and advanced MA students. Participation is free of charge, but conditional upon application (see below). Participation to the master class requires attending the public lecture, reading the assigned readings, and preparing a brief (10 minutes) presentation of one’s research project. This presentation should focus on (feminist) methodological issues and embodiment, and might reflect on how an understanding of “carrying” plays out in one’s own research.

PhD students from any Flemish university receive one credit (1 ECTS) upon completion of the master class. Other PhD students receive, on completion, a ‘proof of successful participation’, which can be recognized by their home PhD programme. MA students can apply for registration on an individual basis and receive ‘proof of successful participation’.

How to apply?
Send us a brief statement of interest by October 31, 2015.

The statement should include a presentation of your research, with special emphasis on methodological and epistemological issues, as well as present questions that you would like to see addressed during the master class. The statement should not exceed 1000 words, and should be sent to sarah.bracke@vub.ac.be

You will be notified by November 10 about your participation to the master class. A brief reading list will be available from that date onwards.
